Ivan Ojakol is a Commercial lawyer with specialty in the Trade, Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT), Tax and Sports Law sectors. He is the Founder at the Centre for Digital Trade-Africa lawyer, a Trade consulting firm.
Ivan regularly advises and represents clients on Trade issues across the whole value chain including their tax issues and litigation at the East African Court of Justice. He has also developed expertise on the Africa Continental Free Trade Area and has recently done some considerable work on digital trade for a leading international organization.
He has also advised many leading startups in the e-commerce, fintech, ride- hailing, blockchain, artificial intelligence space, to mention but a few. Ivan has also done considerable work in the telecommunications space and is retained as Counsel by a Couple of leading Internet Service Providers in Uganda.
He has trained many corporate companies and the telecommunication giants on various topics in the technology space like blockchain technology, data protection, cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, to mention but a few.
Ivan is a budding Sports Lawyer and writes a weekly column “Sports & The Law” in the Saturday Monitor newspaper. He has advised sportsmen, federations and other stakeholders on different aspects of Sports Law. He is currently undertaking a FIFA Program on Sports Law.
Ivan is a regular speaker at high profile technology events that bring together leading industry players and stakeholders.
Education & Court Admissions
Ivan was called to the Ugandan Bar in 2019. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice – Law Development Centre, Kampala and LLB (Honours) – Uganda Christian University, Mukono.
Ivan is currently a Masters student in Trade Law and Policy, Lund University and has attended many courses and trainings on Trade Law and Policy and in technology and Telecommunications sector.
Leadership, Membership & Honors
Ivan is a member of the Uganda Law Society and the East African Law Society.
He is also rising Star in the area and has been recognized at the Africa Legal Awards, 2020.
Ivan also lectures among others Computational law, Intellectual Property and Tax at the International University of East Africa (IUEA).
